Long Distance Moves with Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms

Moving companies will not move some items. For local moves, you can easily load specialty items in your car and drive them to your new home, making several trips in one day. You cannot do that with long-distance moves. It is certainly not possible if you are moving abroad. Some of the most challenging things to deal with on long-distance moves are alcohol, tobacco, firearms (along with other weapons). Here are some tips that can help you manage these items.

Alcohol

Sealed bottles of wine and spirits can be shipped within Canada as long as they are properly packed. If you have a rare wine collection, consider climate-controlled shipping, especially if the inside of the moving van will be subject to extreme temperatures. Many moving companies will not take carbonated beverages (champagne, beer, etc.) as the seals can rupture during shipping.

Most countries have specific limits on the amount of alcohol you can import for personal use. Before your goods can cross an international border, you must get permits and pay tariffs. You may have to use a shipping company authorized to import alcohol. Contact Customs Services of your destination country for detailed information on importing wine, spirits, and other alcoholic beverages. If you are working with a professional moving company, they can likely assist you.

Finish off or give away unsealed bottles before you move. If you are limited in the amount of alcohol you can transport, make arrangements to give away your excess or place it into long-term storage.

Tobacco

Like alcohol, most moving companies will ship tobacco in sealed containers. The inside of moving vans can be subject to wildly fluctuating temperature and humidity levels. Take any unsealed cigars with you or individually seal them in zipper-lock bags to ensure they do not dry out on the trip. If you are shipping a humidor, remember to empty the water reservoir.

Tobacco, like alcohol, has import restriction limits in most countries. Your moving company can advise you on how to contact Customs Services in your destination country for information on how to import tobacco products.

Note: Even though cannabis is now legal in Canada, it is still illegal to transport it out of the country, even if it is legal at your destination. This includes medical cannabis.

Firearms

If you are shipping restricted or prohibited firearms within Canada, you will need an Authorization to Transport (ATT) permit from the RCMP in your province. You do not need an ATT for non-restricted firearms that you are transporting yourself or if a licensed carrier is shipping the firearms. For more information on firearm storage, display, and transportation, visit Justice Canada.

If you are moving abroad, determine if your firearm is legal in your destination country. You will likely need to obtain the services of a licenced firearms dealer as well. It may take several weeks to process the importation paperwork and receive permits, so start it as early as possible. If your firearm is not legal in your destination country, consider selling it. If it is a temporary move, store it in an authorized storage facility.

Moving companies will not transport ammunition because it is classified as dangerous goods (potentially explosive). Dispose of your ammunition before your move. Your local police services can provide information on how to do this safely. NEVER place ammunition in your curbside garbage or recycling.

Other Weapons

Place crossbows, hunting knives, swords, etc., into “safe” mode and place them in locked carrying cases for shipping. Moving companies can refuse to transport illegal items (brass knuckles, stun guns, switchblade knives, etc.). If you are moving to another country, check with their Customs office to determine if your specific items are permitted. For example, in the United Kingdom, it is illegal to bring in swords, including samurai swords.
