As we approach a new year, let’s reflect on the home organizing trends. At Out of Chaos, we’re seeing a shift in focus. People are choosing practical, low-cost, easy-to-maintain systems. Here are some trends on their way out and those we want to see more of.
Out: Unitasker Novelty Products. In: Multi-functional Storage.
Out: Unitasker Novelty Products
Every home has at least one of what I call “organizing novelty products.” I’m sure you’re familiar with them. We see them on TV (primarily infomercials). These items promise to “finally organize your closet/drawer/cupboard once and for all!” They seem like miracle solutions – at first. However, their limited use often leads to clutter instead of clarity. After a while, people shove them into corners of basement closets. I usually refer to these novelty products as unitaskers because they only organize one thing and lack the versatility needed for modern-day living.
In: Multi-functional Storage Solutions
Investing in adaptable storage solutions is one of the most significant home organizing trends. Multi-functional storage is key to maintaining a tidy home. In a previous article, I wrote about various multi-functional furniture pieces that save space and have built-in storage. Besides multi-functional furniture, Out of Chaos recommends basic storage containers that people can use in various spaces in the home. Here are a few of my favourites:
- Stackable shoe box with lid. These 6-litre bins fit on almost any shelf in any closet and can store a variety of small items. They are perfect for bathrooms, toy rooms, craft rooms, and more.
- Pantry bins with handles. These sturdy bins are great for kitchens and pantries. They also fit nicely in upper cupboards, which typically have shallower standard shelves. The handles make it easy to grab them from upper and lower shelves.
- Rugged totes such as the Rubbermaid 53L Roughneck or the HDX 45L Tote. Besides their sturdy construction, it’s easy for most adults to carry bins of this size. They are great for storing items in basements, garages, and attics because they stack nicely.
Of course, many other multi-functional storage systems are available, including adaptable closet systems, slatwall systems, and adjustable, customizable shelving units like IKEA’s IVAR.
Out: Buying New. In: Reusing and Repurposing.
Everyone is feeling the economic pinch these days. The prices seem to be higher every time I shop. High prices are the most likely driver of one of the biggest home organizing trends – a shift towards sustainability and mindfulness. In fact, “reuse over replace” is one of our mantras at Out of Chaos.
Out: Buying New for Every Organizing Challenge
Marketing experts push us to shop for organizing products. They target typical rituals like New Year’s Resolutions, Spring Cleaning, and Back-to-School. With those glossy sale flyers showing us picture-perfect homes, they make it very tempting to “shop until we drop.” While new bins, boxes, and baskets may feel like the answer, they often lead to excess spending – and clutter.
In fact, in many homes, the Out of Chaos team finds loads of unused and underutilized storage bins and containers. Sadly, our clients buy bins, baskets, and organizing systems, only to realize they don’t quite fit the space or their needs. It’s disheartening to see money spent on a houseful of mismatched products that won’t serve their long-term organizing goals.
In: Reusing and Repurposing
As I mentioned, the Out of Chaos team members are experts at using what our clients already have. We take stock of what is already on site. Then, with a bit of ingenuity and creativity, we repurpose and rearrange to build more effective storage solutions. For example, unused jars from the pantry can hold office or craft supplies. Or, cover a cardboard box with washi tape to create an inexpensive storage box that matches your décor. Honestly, the reuse-repurpose list is endless. (If you don’t believe me, check out Pinterest!)
Most people like repurposing because it saves money. Moreover, it fosters creativity, reduces waste and adds personality and character to your space. Additionally, children love creating homemade storage solutions, so it’s the perfect opportunity to tidy their rooms.
Out: Quick Fixes. In: Lifestyle Habits.
A complete home makeover was one of the most popular home organizing trends of the past. Although this instant solution does the job, it is often not sustainable. In today’s modern world, adopting everyday habits to keep your home tidy and functional over the long term is a better option.
Out: One-and-Done Decluttering
TV shows and social media posts feature massive transformations in a short period of time. The allure and drama of a one-time, theatric decluttering session is compelling. While it makes for great entertainment, these overhauls don’t often address the behaviours and lifestyle factors that cause clutter to build up in the first place.
In: Daily Habits for a Clutter-Reduced Home
I’m all for a “done-in-a-day” approach to kick-start a clutter-free life, but clutter will creep back into our homes unless we change our habits. The result is a cycle of mess, stress, and more one-and-done sessions.
Instead of scheduling day-long decluttering events, consider weaving decluttering and organizing into your daily routine. In fact, small, consistent actions – like tidying up for 15 minutes a day – build the habit of a clutter-free home and lifestyle. Additionally, develop simple processes such as assigning a home for every item and teaching kids to put their toys away after playing. These simple routines will result in big changes over time.
Of course, the key to lasting results is consistency. Instead of expecting perfection overnight, focus on making organizing a part of your everyday life. By integrating these habits, tidying your home will feel like a common part of your day rather than an overwhelming chore.
Consider these home organizing trends when you’re ready to create lasting change. Look for organizing and storage systems prioritizing function, form, and flexibility. And remember to look around your home first and see what you can reuse and repurpose. Finally, prepare to say goodbye to quick fixes and adopt sustainable habits to keep clutter at bay.
