I was happy to discuss getting in the mood for spring cleaning with Michelle Eliot on BC Today. We talked about how the warm weather and sunshine inspire our spring-cleaning efforts. At this time of the year, we’re coming out of the depths of winter’s cold weather. When we look back at our home’s stagnant areas, we want to refresh and rejuvenate them.
Michelle asked me if our approach to spring cleaning changed over the pandemic. In some ways, it is the same; we still want to spring clean. However, it is more difficult now because people have been doing everything at home – school, work, exercising – you name it. That means there is more stuff accumulating. We need to figure out how to make the most of our space. The most common clutter hot spots are the areas that people live in the most, including living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Guest rooms often become a “catch-all” space for everything, so homeowners need to clear those spaces out to welcome summertime guests.
Another challenge many people have is knowing what to do with the items they no longer want. Not everything needs to, or even should, go to the landfill. There are many places to sell or donate your used goods.
I also shared my biggest tips for getting started: using the C.L.E.A.R. process and working in 15-minute chunks of time. I also suggest people work in one spot. They should resist putting items away one at a time, as that can break their focus.
Finally, we discuss how to make spring cleaning fun and not so much of a chore. Listeners called in with other great tips on spring cleaning, decluttering, and organizing. To get into the mood for spring cleaning, tune in to the show and hear more, starting at about the 28th minute.
