Almost everyone has moved from one home to another in their lifetime. Some moves are just across town; others are halfway around the world. But no matter the distance, we often encounter at least one common misconception about moving. Here are a few that I would like to resolve right now.
I can disassemble and reassemble furniture myself.
If you have sentimental or expensive/antique furniture, you should hire a furniture assembly pro. They have specialized tools and experience to disassemble and reassemble your treasures without damage. This is especially important for billiard tables, grandfather clocks, and sculpture-like artwork. For other types of furniture, save yourself a few hours and a ton of frustration; read the instruction manual. Then, take pictures during every step of disassembly, so you look at them during reassembly.
I won’t need extra insurance coverage.
Moving companies offer basic liability insurance coverage, which you automatically get with your move. A common misconception about moving is this coverage is enough. Chances are, it is not enough. The basic insurance works out to about $1.32 per kilogram per item. That means if your $3000 desk weighs 120kg and is damaged beyond repair, your payout amount would be only $158 regardless of its current value! In addition, the movers’ coverage does not include damage to items that you packed yourself.
Some moving companies offer Replacement Value Protection coverage for an extra fee. If they cannot repair an item, they will replace it with a new one. You can also check with your home insurance company. You may be able to get an add-on to your policy to cover moving insurance. Always thoroughly examine your insurance options. Ask questions, and be sure you understand your coverage and the exclusions. Also, review and adjust your deductible because it varies from plan to plan.
All moving companies are the same.
No! Just like in other industries, there are differences in reputation, service, and pricing. Furthermore, companies specialize in specific types of moves such as residential, offices, high-rise buildings, or specific items (pianos, sculptures, antiques, etc.). When obtaining estimates from moving companies, ensure they have adequate experience and equipment and can handle the specifics of your move. Don’t base your decision solely on price. Check the listings at the Canadian Association of Movers. Their members follow a guide to professional conduct and promote high ethical standards in the industry.
Moving is always chaotic, disorganized, and stressful.
A certain amount of anxiety will always accompany moving from one home to another. And that is why a common misconception about moving is that it is always chaotic and stressful. However, it doesn’t have to be. Preparing and planning will make the process easier. For example, long before you need to move, start decluttering. Donate, sell, or give away items you no longer need or want to move to your new home. When it comes time to move, you will have less stuff (and maybe a bit more money).
Working backwards from your moving date, make a list of things you need to do and when you need to do them, such as:
- interview moving companies
- cancel or transfer utilities and other services
- arrange child and/or pet care
- schedule home cleaning services
- book elevators and reserve parking for the moving van
- etc.
You can also reduce stress by packing what you don’t need as early as possible. No one needs snowsuits in July, so get them into a labelled box. You can write on the box or use colour-coded labels.
