The bathroom is most likely the busiest room in the house. To make it more efficient and most importantly, easy to clean, take a look at some of these simple bathroom organizing tools. At Out of Chaos, our goal is to help you reduce costs by using what you already have. So, for each option below, I’ve also provided a do-it-yourself alternative.
Under the Sink Cupboard
The cupboards under the sink are notoriously difficult to organize. The drainpipe comes down somewhere in the middle of the space making it almost impossible to install shelving. Solutions from ShelfGenie like this pull-out shelving provide a customized fit for those hard-to-reach spaces.
Sometimes the space under the sink is very narrow and deep. Because of that, bottles of cleaning products get pushed to the back hidden behind towels and containers of shampoo. As a result, we have to get down on our hands and knees and search in the dark back corners to find what we need. In order to solve that problem, use these nifty under-the-sink drawers from Canadian Tire or Bed Bath and Beyond. They can hold towels, bottles of shampoos or cleaners, a few rolls of toilet paper or boxes of sanitary supplies – all within easy pullout reach.
DIY Option: Repurpose the drawer from an old dresser by attaching small wheels to the bottom. You may need to cut a section from the back of the drawer, so it fits around the drainpipes. In a pinch, cut holes in the front and back of a cardboard box and turn it upside down to make an instant shelf. Be careful with this option because if the cardboard gets wet (as can happen when under a sink) it will collapse.
Shelving
Finding bathroom storage when you have a pedestal sink in a small bathroom is a challenge. A drawer unit such as this tall narrow set can fit between a pedestal sink and a wall. In a similar fashion, some corner shelves will slide underneath a pedestal sink. Whatever you decide to buy, the first thing you need to do is carefully measure your space to ensure the unit you buy will fit.
Freestanding shelving over the toilet can add lots of storage space to a bathroom. Smaller items should be stored in baskets to prevent them from being accidentally knocked into the toilet. Some people prefer wall-mounted cabinets because they are enclosed. Also, they add a polished look to the bathroom. However, always make sure the cabinet doors are closed when you sit down because it can result in a nasty bump on the head if you stand up and hit an open door. What you choose depends on how you want your space to look.
DIY Option: Taping boxes together so they open facing outwards is a great way to make some temporary shelving. Repurpose a hanging shoe organizer to hold towels and other bathroom items.
Drawers
If you are fortunate enough to have a cabinet with drawers, using drawer organizers will help you keep your cosmetics and personal care products grouped together. These bamboo containers are available in various sizes so you can choose only the ones you need to customize your drawer storage.
DIY Option: Create your own drawer storage using products you already have around the home. Cereal boxes and tissue boxes can be cut to the sizes you need. To make them easy to clean – and create a personal touch – cover them inside and out with colourful duct tape.
Countertop
There are so many bathroom organizing tools to help you get your bathroom counter in order. There are over-the-cupboard-door caddies to hold your hairstyling accessories and organizers specifically for cosmetics and jewelry.
DIY Option: Think about what you already own. Use old coffee mugs or toilet rolls attached together and covered in colourful duct tape to hold cosmetic brushes. Spray paint an old cookie sheet or muffin tin to keep items together on your counter.
Keeping your bathroom organized makes it easier to clean and makes it easier for people to find what they need. You don’t need expensive, single-use items. Look around your home and see what items you can repurpose for bathroom organizing tools. Remember that if you need some organizing advice, contact Out of Chaos for a virtual consultation.
