From downsizing to death cleaning, I was happy to provide my opinions and share my knowledge with Jim Slotek of Everything Zoomer in an article entitled, From Downsizing to Death Cleaning, How Baby Boomers Can Purge a Lifetime of Possessions.
The article describes the situations of people in the process of downsizing. It also explains the differences in points of view on “stuff” between older and younger generations. I’ve written about these topics in further detail in the articles, Kids Don’t Want Their Parents’ Stuff and Millennials, Moving, and Minimalism.
Some professional organizers prefer that their clients not be present during the downsizing process However…
“[Linda] Chu is all about… giving [people] agency over their own downsizing. ‘It’s about the generation gap in many respects,’ she says. ‘But really, it’s the waste, the years people spent in layaway plans paying for these things. It’s the blood, sweat and tears of acquiring a houseful of life and, then, in a matter of weeks — a week for every decade on average — you’ve got to process all you’ve acquired and re-home. And it’s a really, really different and emotional process.”
The following downsizing tips were mentioned in the article:
- Curtail your book buying.
- Digitize your music.
- Learn how to properly “wipe” your old phones and computers.
- Buy fewer clothes.
- Throw a downsizing party.
- Know what you’re allowed to sell.
- Consider your options according to your needs.
- Be thoughtful with your purchases.
