The lure of home décor magazines is incredibly strong when we’re preparing to move to a new home. We imagine living in rooms that look just like those glossy, perfectly staged photos. It is so tempting to buy chic, trendy items for our new home before moving in. However, we have to live in a space for a while, going through our normal daily routines to see what works best for our lifestyle. Furniture, décor items, and organizing tools are three things that you might want to wait to purchase.

Furniture

Your new home likely has a different layout than your current home. After living in the home for a bit, you will see where everyone likes to congregate. You can also watch how people move through the house from room to room and circulate within each room. Once you have established those parameters, then focus on buying furniture and area rugs that work with traffic flow and your taste in design.

For example, the sectional sofa that looked great during the home staging may block traffic flow to the kitchen. Choosing furniture that complements how you function within the home will increase your enjoyment and help you stay organized.

Décor

Your new living space will feel more like home if you use the best pieces from your previous home and add specially selected new pieces. Don’t buy too much at once. You will want to have space to add new memories as time passes.

Wait to purchase custom or expensive window coverings (curtains, blinds, etc.) until you live in the home. Sheer curtains over the patio door could be better than blinds for letting the daylight shine through to brighten the space. Depending on where your neighbours are (or where they are looking), blackout blinds on bedroom windows may be the best option.

Organizing Supplies

New home. New start. You vow to yourself that in this house, you’ll be organized. But don’t go buying drawer organizers, bins, and baskets yet! The way you work in the new home could be slightly different from your last home. After a few weeks, you might decide the initial kitchen set-up was inefficient. When you re-arrange the items, the drawer organizers may no longer fit in their new spaces. Take your time and live in the space. Think about processes rather than products. Once you are comfortable with where everything is located, then spend money on pretty organizing supplies.
