Last week I had a segment on Breakfast Television Vancouver to talk about how the KonMari method has sparked buzz in the organizing community. The KonMari method focuses on decluttering. You imagine if the item has a place in your future by asking if an item sparks joy. Sparking joy, while important, is only one qualifier. You can also ask yourself, “When was the last time I used this?” and “Do I need to keep this for a specific purpose?”
In the photo above, I show the KonMari method folding clothes. It is very useful because it arranges the clothes vertically so you can see everything easily.
The KonMari method encourages people to discard books they have already read. But academics and other individuals may be resistant. The ideal number of books is whatever works for that person and depends on their profession and their life circumstances.
On a final note, there are always trends in decluttering and organizing that pop up now and again. However, if you focus on the true goal of the exercise – whether that be to entertain in your home or to create more space, you will be successful in your endeavours.
Read more about the KonMari vs the NonMari method and reasons why Marie Kondo’s life-changing magic of tidying up may not work for everyone.
