It’s true, we can all get caught up looking at the big houses on TV shows and in magazines. Great rooms, two story foyers, mudrooms and ample lawns. In fact, you may live in one now. But, does it really reflect how you live day-to day? The idea of right-sizing your home is that you live in a place that actually fits you and your family’s lifestyle.
Right-sizing may not mean losing floor space but having the right amount of floor space in a residence and location that suits you. Remember, a bigger home isn’t better – in fact, it may be the opposite!
Questions to Ask About Right-Sizing
- How much of your home do you really use? If you have rooms that you rarely (or never!) enter, you’re likely living in the wrong sized house.
- Do you need space for entertaining? If you only use your living room and dining room at Christmas, finding a home with a different layout would be much more practical.
- Do you enjoy home maintenance? The bigger the house, the more work it requires. However, some people love to garden and putter around.
- How much time do you spend at home? If you’re a snowbird, a big house in the suburbs likely isn’t appropriate for you. But it’s a different story if you have three kids and a dog.
- Do you need space for hobbies? While a scrapbooker only needs a small space, a mountain biker or car collector clearly needs more.
It’s important to find a space that suits how you truly use it. Right-sizing is a thoughtful choice to make your home fit you.
