Does your office have a huddle room? Many organizations destined for success create special places for employees to collaborate. These spaces go by many descriptors – huddle rooms, collaborative office spaces, think tanks, brainstorm rooms and so on – and can be fantastic for office productivity.
Here are a few reasons why:
1. Place to Focus
Many offices now are open concept. And while this can be great for the occasional collaboration session, these chats may be more around the latest Netflix show your neighbour just binge-watched. (For more on staying productive in an open concept office, check out my recent post, How to Be Productive in an Open Concept Office.) However, a space away from the office hub blocks out all other noise and allows employees to concentrate on a task. In fact, even if there are offices to meet in, email alerts and phone calls from the office owner can be distracting. A good think tank is a neutral ground.
2. Encourages Teamwork
A boardroom tends to be more formal and serious than a huddle room. This room is where you can mark up a whiteboard, share snacks, and get messy while holding an impromptu video conference from a laptop. Although some fabulous examples exist, these areas don’t need to be big, fancy or expensively decorated. If there aren’t enough chairs, no big deal. Standing room – or even floor – will do.
3. Inspires Creativity
Bright colours, couches, low stools, whiteboards, mini basketball hoops and more. Building a great collaborative space where employees would be happy to spend time is not hard. And, undoubtedly, the staff would love to be engaged in the decorating! Get energy from your creative surroundings and let the brainstorming begin.
Collaborative workspaces not only make employees productive, but it expresses your office culture. That’s important too.
