The entryway is the one area in every home that gets messy easily. It’s the passage for every family member coming in, putting their things down and cluttering what is often already a very congested area. The three fixes for your cluttered entryway problems are:
- Hanging Space for Coats
- Shoe Storage
- Mail and Miscellaneous Drop Zone
Hanging Space for Coats
If you live in a small space or don’t have an entryway closet, use hooks on the wall. This system allows you to hang things up neatly and is great in those “grab-and-go” situations when you rush out of the door.
Shoe Storage
It doesn’t matter if you have a big family or a small one, shoes are always a problem. If you just kick them off in the entryway, they will quickly become a disorderly pile.
A shoe rack may be the answer to your problem. Nowadays there are lots of different options to choose from. You can pick a shoe rack that is expandable, stackable or both. Then, adjust and tailor to your needs. This way, your shoes are off the floor, and your chaos is conquered. If the quantity of shoes is your problem, keep only shoes that you wear all the time and store seasonal and special occasion shoes in clear shoe boxes.
Mail and Miscellaneous Drop Zone
Another common thing we all do when getting in the door is finding a place to drop our daily mail, keys and other miscellaneous items. We often put things down randomly ‘somewhere’ and immediately forget about it. Place a console table or mount a shelf in the entryway to create a mail drop area near the door. It shouldn’t be a permanent spot. It’s temporary for those times when you want to empty your hands. You will know exactly where to find those items at a later time.
Start a designated home for your can’t-leave-the-house-without and “grab-and-go” items. Have designated hooks or cubicles for wallets, keys, doggie poop bags, and anything you need as you walk out the door.
