Change or Die was a very engaging presentation we attended by David Bentall, an accomplished executive coach and athlete. His interactive session explored what he learned about making lasting changes in your personal and professional life.
Working with clients struggling with defining their office systems and processes, I often notice that their business demands and priorities have changed and evolved, but their methods haven’t. Change or Die made me think about how we must constantly adjust our systems or become stagnant and die (maybe not literally). Still, indeed, it may apply to your productivity and effectiveness in your job and workplace.
David cited some points from the book “Change or Die,” by Alan Deutchman.
The Three Main Key Points in Change
- Relate: Get inspired and make small shifts in your systems & processes to make them easily achievable. You won’t use something too complicated or inconvenient.
- Repeat: Practice consistently to become proficient with your tasks and routines.
- Reframe: It’s a new way of thinking and making small shifts in your processes to create new habits that will stick.
Change does not come easy. We are creatures of habit, even if these habits work against our productivity. Be prepared to commit the time on the front end to develop customized systems to your current priorities and demands. David talks about “simple systems executed precisely.”
Fear, Facts, and Force Do Not Encourage Change
- Fear may momentarily work but won’t help you in the long run.
- Facts may provide valuable statistics, but they are insufficient to empower change.
- Force is purely short-term and does not get your buy-in for lasting change.
Statistics report that nine out of ten people don’t change their lifestyles or behaviours even when their lives depend on them. Your life might not depend on it, but Out of Chaos can help you bring about lasting change with your home organizing and productivity. Contact us today to find out how.
