Wouldn’t it be nice if you could find things when you need them and enjoy uncluttered living space in every room? Professional Organizer, Linda Chu shows Bill Mantas from CityTV how to declutter a home.

The Office

The homeowner carved out a corner of their living room for an office but it was cluttered with CDs, papers, and photo albums and it was unsightly when they were entertaining. To declutter this home, we had the homeowner identify four primary uses of this space. Most of it was work-related but the children used the computer for video games and reading nook.

To make it neat and tidy and still have all of the items accessible, we introduced some organizing products. You can store books and paperwork in magazine holders and turn them backwards so guests can’t see the items inside. We put the children’s books in a basket with a lid with the spines facing up like a filing cabinet. It makes it easier for the kids can find the book they are looking for. We used some decorative boxes with labels to categorize and contain the CDs. Again, the homeowner can find everything but guests won’t see stacks of CD jewel cases.

The Entry

The bookshelf was in the entryway to the home and it was a catch-all. Everything ended up on this shelving unit resulting in a cluttered mess. To improve the look and functionality we sorted through everything on the bookshelf and tossed recycling and garbage. We relocated other items to their proper location in the home. For example, we put the laundry back in the bedrooms.

We added some seagrass baskets to hold magazines. Storing them with the spine facing up means the homeowner can find the ones they want. We used the rest of the shelving to display some personal items. In the cabinet underneath, we organized office supplies and photo albums.

The Dining Area

The family’s dining table and kitchen counter were catch-alls for papers, school work, games, as well as dishes and other kitchen items. We repurposed this chest of drawers and assigned a drawer to each family member. It keeps everything contained and the chest functions as a sideboard for when the family entertains.
